ENOUGH reveals the horrific truth about gender-based violence. These sad stories told by victims
of domestic violence and sexual abuse – are far worse than we can think of. Some of the victims could succeed in speaking out about their toxic and abusive relationship and could find a way to escape, while others were forced to keep quiet.
When is enough – enough? Some victims faced gruesome violence against them, while others faced death. These stories told by anonymous victims may inspire you to take action against abusive partners or husbands – more so – to live safe and free from violence.
ENOUGH by Maria ES Prinsloo is the shocking truth of men, women, and children that suffers from some kind of abuse. As a survivor herself, she knows her subject and with sensitive emotions, she is competent to tell the story of many victims. What I found rather interesting is the following quote from page 6: ‘There is a lie that woman cannot be raped by their partners or husbands.’ Prinsloo then explains why women are silent about this kind of abuse.
The book contains a checklist for an abusive relationship (pg. 9), which will assist any person who might be in denial or who feels imprisoned in a relationship, for example: ‘Are you wondering if you are crazy or if the situation is real, but feeling emotionally numb to the fact that you know what is coming? Do you feel helpless or ashamed to talk to your friends or family about what is behind closed doors?’
It is this kind of question that provokes the thought of whether a person is in a relationship that might be abusive.
The author also has a section on stress relief exercises and easy self-defence tactics (pg. 164). Maria’s creative writing is descriptive and easy to read. With step-by-step explanations, the author brings a good balance and a praiseworthy book. Her use of language is exceptional, and the topic is well studied and justified with excellent self-help steps and encouragement. This has also an emotional tension line, deployed with a counselling guideline for victims of domestic violence.
In the introduction to Enough, Prinsloo wrote these truly inspiring words: ‘Women are caregivers and mothers, the glue that keeps families together. It is time for the woman of the world to join hands in this fight. We are strong, we are worthy, and we are warriors, who will overcome our greatest challenges.’
This particular book is worth reading and can certainly benefit many women and men – even parents. Whether you find yourself in a happy relationship or an abusive friendship, in both cases there are many wonderful benefits for both parties
